R.I.P. Fish And Chips

Posted in Talking Fish at 1:38 pm by Seth Scrimsher

This week the already bizarre food service in Petersburg became even more strange as Coastal announced they would be closing down their fryers and grill. You can now easily find Mexican food, Chinese food, and Korean BBQ, but no fish and chips in this Norwegian fishing community. Our last hope is Northern Lights Restaurant. I pray every day (mostly around lunch time) that they find it in their hearts to open a quick and easy seafood bar in the front of their restaurant.

On an interesting side note I heard (2nd hand so of course its true) that Coastal went through 35,000 lbs of french fries last year and 94,000 pieces of chicken. That’s only an average of 11 lbs of french fries per year per person. I wonder how much grease you can wring out of 11 lbs of cooked french fries. I think my arteries are only functioning because of the amount of oil holding them together. This forced change to a healthier diet could be the death of me.

Lovely fish and chip

Golden heart attack delight

I now weep for you

Stikine Kings!

Posted in Talking Fish at 9:13 am by Seth Scrimsher

The Stikine King Gillnet fishery opens on May 7th, ten days earlier then the much over-hyped Copper River fishery. Every year, for some insane reason, people spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to get the first Copper River fish to Seattle. Most of these salmon chef wannabes don’t realize that even better fish has already been circulating throughout the market from the Stikine fishery.

Hmmm… How can we get Stikine Kings as much attention as that lesser quality Copper River fish? I’m thinking a float plane, helicopter, private jet, Scarlett Johansson in a bikini, and the music from Apocalypse Now playing in the background. If anybody has one of the above let me know, we can work out a partnership.
