The Sitka herring sac roe fishery was open yesterday (March 26th) for 2 hours and 50 minutes at 4:10pm. An estimated 2,500 tons was harvested. Herring roe is using exported to Japan where it is considered a traditional delicacy usually given as a gift. Recently it has been showing up year round in sushi bars and restaurants.
The herring roe on kelp fishery is only about a week away. Will wants to start selling pickled herring roe on kelp. He says his secret pickling sauce will make us millionaires. I told him I didn’t want to know what it was in case I had to testify in court.

Halibut season opened March 10th at 12 noon. The quota this year is lower by about 20% from 2006. Price to the fisherman started in the $5.25-$6.00 per lb range as distributors scrambled to get fresh fish to their markets. Since then the price has plunged to $4.25 a lb here in Petersburg.
Halibut prices bouncing around is bad for everyone from the fisherman all the way to the consumer. Right now there is a lot of fish hitting the market in the lower 48 with prices all over the board. Retailers will be looking for another white fish alternative if Halibut prices stay this erratic.
We bought a few hundred lbs to satisfy the restaurants we provide fish for. We also have some in stock for our retail store and our website.
